Drinking Vegans

It surprises me how veganism is growing. It’s the latest cool fad, especially among young women.

Like all those chubby folk who consciously or subconsciously take up smoking in a vain attempt to slim down. No matter what other tradeoffs to their general health need to be made. When I see a bunch of plump puffers outside a smoke-free building on their breaks, I feel like saying, “Sure good you smoke so you won’t be so FAT!”

Back to vegans. These folks eat only plant matter. They scrounge around various exotic fauna to try to piece together a healthy diet in a futile attempt to avoid malnutrition. Forget about the fact that some essential amino acids aren’t made by plants. Even though the human body in theory can generate its own. In practice, it doesn’t do such a hot job of it.

Then there are the raw vegans. Wow, are they in for a bad time. So many plants in the raw state have certain enzymes that the plant makes to protect itself from bacteria that would love to munch on it. These enzymes are the plant’s natural defenses. And they’re toxic to humans.

Yes, some are deactivated by fermentation. Many fermentation processes not only denature the toxic enzymes but generate important enzymes to aid human digestion. Sauerkraut is a classic example. But there’s a limit to the number of fermented products even a vegan can or will eat.

Cooking, or at least steaming vegetables is another very effective way to neutralize those toxic vegetable enzymes. But vegans don’t want to hear that. Instead they hold onto the slim chance that they can somehow remain healthy with their depleted diets. Personally, I think they’re hoping more for the “thin” than for the “chance.”

Regardless, the thing that absolutely floors me is how many of these folks, presumably interested in health and maybe even more harmony with nature can stoop to consuming alcohol.

I have asked some of these folks the following questions:

  • Have you ever heard of someone been pulled over on the highway because they were “hamburger impaired?”
  • Do people go to detox centers to get over their SlimJim addiction?
  • Have you ever heard of domestic violence precipitated by a steak dinner?

Of course these vegetarians have no answers. How can they? Alcohol has been at the root of so much death, violence, poor health and bad judgment, how can they honestly defend its consumption? Of course, they can’t honestly. Alcohol may be pleasurable — until the morning after — but they know their hypocrisy has just been exposed.

Funny how most of us would rather loose our pants in public than have our hypocrisy exposed. I guess that’s because it’s an even more intimate revelation.

Chew on that for a while.
